Mac OS Mojave 10.14. Hi, i have the Mac Mini 2018 with an eGPU connected. I would love to disable the internal graphics card, because its a piece of crap. Unfortunately, a lot of apps still fall back to the integrated one instead of using the faster eGPU. Chrome is one of those candidates. When checking chrome://gpu it shows me the wrong GPU as active. (Its obvious when comparing the performance of Google Maps vs the performance in Safari, which uses the eGPU).
I did set 'prefer external GPU' for it; no change. 1) Any known ways to force Chrome (not Chromium) to use the right GPU?
2) Any way to DISABLE the integrated one, so apps can just not use it?
What he said. Oh man, does it work. Mine is a late 2008 2ghz Macbook and I did this 2 years ago. Sped up tremendously and it hasn't slowed down since. The drives are cheaper now, too. For a media consumption machine it is excellent.
Another tip: Clean it out. I'm not sure what model you have but if you can get the case open clean the fan and heat sink for the processor. Dust collects in there blocking air flow and slowing down the fan. Cleaning that out gave it some more pep. The two together and it's a very useful machine. Holds its nicely against new machines.
Free to clean the dust out. A 128GB drive will set you can $70.
Cheaper than a new machine. I would almost assume it should be SSD already. Unless it's an older model. If it isn't that's the way to go. Apple generally has a cycle for their OS upgrades.
Features one year and optimizations the next. So an OS upgrade might help. If you're only using Chrome you probably have something else going on that's slowing it down. My computer is almost 4 years old and just about as fast as my spec'd out work computer that's a newer MBP from last year. Check out sophos maybe.
They have AV software for free. Another excellent choice. I made this move, too. Just got a Dell Chromebook 13 to try out ChromeOS and get some battery life improvements over the old MacBook.
It's a great machine. I miss the 16:10 display a whole lot, but I'm going to keep this and sell the MacBook.
Even going on 8 years old the Unibody machines work so well it should sell for about the outlet price of this Dell. Upgrade the SSD or sell it and get a Chromebook. As long as you are aware of what a CB can and can't do compared to your Mac it's win for you either way.
You'd be surprised still how much they sell as spares / parts. Anyway, going back on my point about the SSD I actually don't think it would help your situation.
True they increase performance and loading massively - my Dads MacBook went from over 80 seconds from pressing the power button to just the login screen to around 18. However Chrome is a MASSIVE power hog on laptops. Both my old 2010 MacBook and then my newer Retina Pro both struggled to run it. Fans rev up, computer gets hot. You would actually be doing yourself a favour getting a Chromebook. My C720 (sub £100) absolutely flies using chrome.
The only thing you could install is ChromiumOS which has similar limitations to Chromium vs Chrome, no flash, limited Google integration etc. That said, unless someone is maintaining an installer, installing ChromiumOS is not meant for common users. If you were to get ChromiumOS from Google, you would be required to compile it all yourself, likely similar in scope to installing Gentoo.
If you want something other than OS X, I would recommend you just install any random Linux distro. ElementaryOS supposedly has an OSX-ish feel to it. Other options: Ubuntu flavors (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Gnome Ubuntu etc.), Fedora, Mint, ChakraOS, Antergos etc. Yes, it is technically possible, but I can't see the advantage of putting it on a Mac. Depends what you need/want. OSX gives you full terminal access already, something people with Chromebooks have to do extra work to get on their machines. I read you dropped it a few times; that will hurt resale.
I'm all for ChromeOS. Please give it a try. Bang for your $, probably better pepping up your MBPro. 1) Moving from Yosemite to El Cap made a big dif in my '08 MB. If you haven't done that, try it. 2) Clean out the processor fan & heat sink. Wouldn't believe the crap that gets in there.

3) Buy stuff: a) get a 120GB or 240GB SSD. Keep your OS and apps on it - media file on another drive. If you can upgrade your RAM, do it.
Tried this on my mini w/o an SSD: Really does improve the snap of things. 8GB is a number if you don't already have it. If after all that you're still not happy with it, sell it and get a decent Chromebook.
Step 4 Set presentation options for the movie. With the file selected on your slide, open the 'Playback Options' menu in the Movie Options section and select 'Play Full Screen' so the movie frame enlarges to fill your presentation screen while it plays. To keep the movie hidden until it plays, select 'Hide While Not Playing' and animate the movie object to trigger playback with a fade in or other effect. Use the 'Rewind After Playing' setting to return the movie to its beginning once playback ends.

Microsoft and Apple have already stopped supporting the older versions of Windows and OS X respectively. As of April 2016, Google Chrome for Desktop will stop supporting Windows XP and Vista, along with OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. Google mentioned in its blog post that Microsoft and Apple have already stopped supporting the old versions of their operating systems. The browser will continue working on these platforms, but it won’t receive any update or security patches after the given time, which may expose the system to malware, adware and viruses attack.
Earlier today Apple announced FaceTime for Mac and released a first beta version for download. Despite some initial download issues, the beta is now up and available. I've tested the app on my MacBook Pro by calling a couple of friends on their iPhone and MacBooks, and it works really well. It's a first beta though, and there are some unpolished areas and unfinished features Apple is likely going to address in the future updates.
