It’s probably fair to say that most of us take Gmail for granted. We just type in our email and password during the Android setup and we are all set. Even the most popular 3rd party email clients in the Play Store automatically set up our Gmail services.
But say things were not this easy what if the email client does not automatically support Gmail? In that case, you would have to set it up yourself. The way to do this is by manually entering the Gmail SMTP, or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, which will allow you to send emails via your Gmail account. The SMTP, along with POP3 and IMAP for receiving emails, identifies to the email client that you are in fact sending a Gmail, and not AOL or Exchange for example. Here is what you will want to enter for the outgoing (sending) server: The server address: smtp.gmail.com Username: [email protected] Security Type: TLS or SSL Port: For TLS: 587; For SSL: 465 For the incoming settings, you will be following two routes: POP3 or IMAP. The difference between the two is that POP3 is really only a good choice when you are only checking your email from one device. The reason for this is that POP3 removes the email from the server when it retrieves it, making it impossible to receive the email on multiple devices.

So granted that you probably use multiple devices, or at least want to prepare for the future, you should use IMAP. Here are the settings: Server Address: either pop.gmail.com or imap.gmail.com Username: [email protected] Port: For POP3: 995; for IMAP: 993 If it asks for a security type, make it match the outgoing server. And that is really all you need to know! Now you can send and receive Gmail’s from an email client as long as you can enter this information. Generally, the screen above can be found somewhere near an Advanced Settings page, or Server Settings; it varies.

Gmail POP and IMAP servers refer to the incoming servers, POP and IMAP is what allows you to download messages from Gmail’s servers onto your computer through an email client. Gmail SMTP servers are the outgoing servers, the SMTP server allows you to send emails through your Gmail accounts from any email program. Sign in to your Gmail account. Click the gear icon to get the drop down menu and select Settings from the list. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP, you will get a new tab as shows in below screenshot.
Under POP Download, select one of the following options: 1. See above figure. Click Save Changes. When you enable POP, your settings display ‘POP Status: POP is enabled.’ If your POP settings are turned off, the status will indicate that POP is disabled. Gmail IMAP Settings The other incoming mail server settting for Gmail (Gmail IMAP Settings)is: imap.gmail.com, requires SSL, use port 993.

Gmail SMTP Settings Gmail SMTP server is smtp.gmail.com. For port, you can use either 587 or 465 for TLS/STATTLS or SSL separately. Select Yes for both the Requires SSL and Requires authentication settings.

If there is any other setting required, use the same ones you supplied for the incoming mail server. The Email Address and Password are your email username and its password for your Gmail account.
